Generalized edema
Etiology
- heart failure
- hepatic cirrhosis
- nephrotic syndrome
- protein-losing enteropathy -inflammatory bowel disease
- severe malnutrition (kwashiorkor)
- hypothyroidism (myxedema)
- Blastocystis hominis
Pathology
- disruption of the balance of hydrostatic & oncotic pressures or increase capillary permeability
Laboratory
- serum albumin is low
- albuminuria may be present
