Etiology
Laboratory
- urinalysis
- acidic urine
- hematuria may be noted
- urine microscopy
- envelope, dumbell or needle-shaped crystals in urine*
- positively birefringent crystals under polarized light
- blue when parallel & yellow when perpendicular to light
- green in MKSAP20[1]
- the four-point cross pattern (Maltese cross) is a classic finding for calcium oxalate crystals in urine under polarized light microscopy[2]
- shown as a square with a 4 point cross at the center with perpendicular extensions of the cross with points ending at the corners of the square
- smaller rectangles also shown each containing what appears to be a cross
* described in[2] as narrow rectangles with pointed ends (images)
