Etiology
- several years of uncontrolled hypertension
Diagnostic procedures
- ophthalmoscopy
- generalized arteriolar narrowing compared with venule diameter
- venule diameters do not vary substantially in most patients with hypertension[2]
- arteriole-to-venule diameter ratio < 2/3 suggests hypertensive retinopathy*

Complications
- increased risk of stroke
- increased risk of coronary artery disease
- increased risk of kidney injury
