Indications

• sleep disturbance
  • excessive daytime sleepiness
  • violent sleep-related behaviors or parasomnias
  • suspected periodic limb movement disorder
• assessment of optimal CPAP therapy
  • assessment of response to therapy
• unexplained pulmonary hypertension
• unexplained polycythemia
• disturbances in respiratory control in patients with daytime hypercapnia
• used to diagnose
  • narcolepsy
  • restless legs syndrome
  • REM behavior disorder
• parasomnias
• sleep apnea

Contraindications

• patients with possible mild & minimally symptomatic* obstructive sleep apnea

* snoring, gasping, low lying palate, partner does not note apnea

• regular sleep schedule, awakens feeling rested, no daytime sleepiness or headaches
• oxygen saturation on room air pulse oximetry is normal

Procedure

• polysomnography (gold standard)
• out-of-center sleep testing
