• a family of endogenous intestinal bacteria
  • among the most abundant bacteria in human gut microbiota

Laboratory

• obligate anaerobe, variably spore-forming bacteria
• ferment diverse plant polysaccharides to short-chain fatty acids (butyrate & acetate) & alcohols (ethanol)
• may protect against colon cancer in humans by producing butyrate
