macular telangiectasia (MacTel)

Classification

• Type 1 MacTel
  • macular edema
  • almost always occurs in one eye
• Type 2 MacTel
  • telangiectasias around the fovea
  • fluid from leaking blood vessels causes the macula to swell or thicken
  • tissue in the macula or the fovea may thin out or form a scar
  • Type 2 affects both eyes but not always to same extent

Pathology

• telangiectasias around the fovea
• macular neovascularization may occue

Clinical manifestations

• loss of central vision
