Etiology
- risk factors
- childhood asthma
- cigarette smoking
- air pollution
Clinical manifestations
- atopy
- elevated serum IgE levels
- elevated blood eosinophil count
Diagnostic procedures
- pulmonary function testing
- obstructive lung disease with some degree of bronchodilator reversibility
- FEV1 increases post-bronchodilator, FEV1/FVC does not (fixed)
- elevated fractional exhaled nitric oxide
Complications
- may be associated with greater symptom burden, more frequent exacerbations, worse quality of life, & higher mortality than asthma or COPD alone.[3,4]
Management
- treatment is similar to asthma
- inhaled glucocorticoids
- long-acting antimuscarinic antagonists
