Introduction
- genus of molds
- widespead distribution, at least 33 species
- Stachybotrys species inhabit materials rich in cellulose
- commonly found in soil, hay, straw, cereal grains, decaying plant debris & air-
- a few species have been found from damp paper, cotton, linen, cellulose-based building materials in water-damaged indoor buildings, & air ducts
- frequently associated with poor indoor air quality that arises after fungal growth on water-damaged building materials
- some species produce mycotoxins
Pathology
- association of Stachybotrys mold with specific health conditions is not well established
