Etiology
- platelet disorders
- thrombocytopenia
- emboli
- vasculitis (rare)
- Neisseria gonorrhoeae
- progressive pigmentary purpura
- Rocky Mountain spotted fever
- scurvy
- senile (traumatic)
Clinical manifestations
- pinhead-sized purpura most frequently on gravitationally impacted skin surfaces & on mucous membranes
- petechiae do not blanch on diascopy[4]
- petechiae are non-palpable (macular)
Differential diagnosis
- vasculitis
- lesions are often palpable due to underlying inflammation of the vessel wall
- non-palpable purpura & petechiae (macular) are more often associated with platelet or coagulation disorders
- lesions are often palpable due to underlying inflammation of the vessel wall
- what appears to be oral petechiae may be evidence of streptococcal pharyngitis[5]
- erythematous tonsils, a tongue may be a strawberry tongue
- a non descript rash may be an erythematous (sandpaper) rash
